Challenge
Prove that a hypercasual game can fund measurable climate impact — and build the reference engine for Operal's white-label business in the process.
Approach
A candy-crush-style puzzler in which every level completed retires real CO₂: half of all in-game purchase and ad revenue buys and retires carbon credits. Pieces are climate-themed — sun, wildfire, rain cloud, tornado, snowflake — and the level map carries a cumulative CO₂ counter. An on-chain leaderboard on Solidity (OpenZeppelin, Hardhat, IPFS), Toucan Protocol retirements and a Nori carbon-removal integration on Polygon made the impact verifiable on-chain. The same engine later became Operal's white-label template for retail loyalty, education and campaigns — reskins from CHF 1,000.
Outcome
160,000+ downloads and 1,800+ tonnes of CO₂ retired by 2023, with 100,000 downloads in the first month alone. A 4.7-star App Store rating at CHF 2–80 in-app purchases. The game established the match-3-with-a-mission format that Operal now ships to clients.
